2014 Newsletter – Pangas Beach Club

Friday, February 28th, 2014

What’s new at Pangas Beach Club in 2014 – Second half of the Las Mareas 2014 newsletter.

Pangas:

In December, Pangas opened up seven days a week for high season and the restaurant has been buzzing ever since. Weddings and events are continuing to be a huge source of business. As of January, Elizabeth had over 45 events on the books for the coming year and I’m sure that number has only gone up since. Here’s a bit about other recent news:

Updates:

  • Pangas Happy Hour is back! Join us 7 days a week at the bar for 2 x 1 specials on select beer and cocktails.
  • Tuesday En Fuego: Enjoy a live fire show every Tuesday after dark
  • The Pangas Fish Market is also open everyday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. We’ve got the freshest fish in the area at prices that beat out the competition. This year we’re selling fish by the portion (200 grams) – for example, we have fresh tuna, grouper, mahi-mahi, snook, snapper and catch of the day ranging in price from $3.00 – $5.40 per portion.

Surfrider Foundation Event:

On January 18th, Pangas was the place to be when it hosted the 2014  Surfrider Foundation Event sponsored by Red Bull. The night was a huge  success with over 405 people taking part in the action. Pangas charged a  cover fee at the door and all proceeds went to benefit the Surfrider  Foundation, a non-profit organization specializing in preserving and  enjoying beaches and oceans around the world.

The fun began with live music at 7 p.m. as community members  gathered  to watch presentations by three-time WCT pro surfers.  The excitement  grew as Red Bull-sponsored, six-time world  champion Sandro Dias put  on a vert skateboard demo on a  temporary half pipe ramp set up on the beach.

Live music, dynamic entertainment, good drinks and great  company for an even better cause – a complete success! We’re  happy Pangas could help raise over over $2,500 to benefit the  Surfrider Foundation. Thanks to everyone who helped make it possible.

Las Mareas Soundbites: Part 4, Pangas Beach Club

Monday, April 8th, 2013

Pangas Beach Club:

Beautiful Pangas Beach Club

Pangas is the beach club for Las Mareas. Typically and historically, beach clubs are offered exclusively to real estate owners and there’s an accompanying fee for that exclusivity. In an effort to keep the cost of ownership at a minimum, Las Mareas created an alternate plan. The plan is to open the beach club to the public and make it a very successful, standalone location. Then, we give the owners of our villas specials rights and privileges at that beach club. Most importantly we treat the owners as a sort of business partner with the beach club. When an owner rents his property with us, the clients run a tab at Pangas much like a hotel and the villa owners get 10% of sales placed in their bank for use at Pangas when they are in town. Other benefits include board storage at the beach, a tab in the villa owners name and exclusive villa delivery and catering options.

Don’t forget to visit Pangas’ Facebook page for regular updates about live music, menu specials and other events.

Some examples of recent happenings at Pangas include:

  • A special Easter brunch with Easter egg hunt and egg decorating for the kids
  • Sunday Funday – All-you-can-eat Sunday buffets with live music, activities and fun for the whole family
  • Jazz Wednesdays – Wednesday night live jazz music by the Tres Amigos
  • And much, much more!

Easter egg painting at Pangas Beach Club!

Pangas’ own website is currently under construction and we will reveal the new, re-vamped version of www.lasmareas.com/pangas-beach-club (which will also be accessible at www.pangasbeachclub.com), in the next few months! Stay tuned.

What People Are Saying About Pangas Beach Club…

What people are saying about Pangas Beach Club:

Check out some of our recent reviews & testimonials from TripAdvisor and Facebook!

March 12, 2013 by PuraVida212 from New York: “Taking it to Another LevelAre you kidding me? This place is awesome! The owners have done a great job of keeping man made in balance with nature. From the minute you walk into the open architecture of restaurant and the fresh display to sitting at hard wood tables under a huge 200 year old tree while having dinner, you will be mesmerized. If you can go for dinner during a full moon. So now on to the food, everything is good. The standouts Peruvian Ceviche and the smoked fish tasting for appetizers and Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Whole Seabass and the Lava rock steaks (I would go with the Ribeye) for dinner. The dark rum mojitos are very good. GREAT JOB! Jean-Luc… The service was good and is easy on the eyes GREAT JOB Elizabeth! My wife and I look forward to many more dinners at Pangas on our next trip to Tamarindo. PURA VIDA.” 5 Stars.

March 5, 2013 by SeanRafter from Maine: “Wow This Place is Great! - The entry is breath taking, and the service superb. The food is exquisite, and view is like Tamarindo of old, nothing but nature in sight. A real respite from the hub bub of downtown, just outside.” 5 Stars.

March 2, 2013 by Jo-Anne & Daryl from Ontario: “Repeat Offenders - We discovered this wonderful place while on our way to book a tour of the estuary for the next day. We visited a total of three times after that for snacks, lunch and supper. Everything was good but the Mahi Mahi and Tuna were perfection. Excellent fruit drinks, comfy chairs, an amazing location right where the ocean meets the estuary and you have paradise. The Barkeep, chefs and staff were all very friendly and made us feel welcome. A special thanks to Lena who took such good care of us when we were there.” 5 Stars.

February 27, 2013 by LaLee1149 from South Carolina: “Excellent Food – Very Fresh! - We had a wonderful dinner the first night we were in Tamarindo and returned 3 more times!!! The Sea Bass was fantastic as was the Yucca root side dish and vegetables!! The Mahi Mahi I had another night was equally as wonderful – very fresh and cooked perfectly!! The fish tacos we had for lunch were outstanding as was the side salad. The atmosphere is amazing – a beautiful view of the water and the giant ficus trees are lovely! There is a very nice amount of space between the tables so you have a very private and pleasant dining experience. The service was very attentive! Do not let any negative reviews keep you from visiting this very wonderful restaurant!!” 5 Stars.

February 21, 2013 by Carole M. from California: “BEST of Everything in Tamarindo - We spent 5 weeks in Tamarindo in 2013 and 4 weeks in 2012. We ate at many restaurants. The service, friendly staff, and the food were outstanding, a cut above anything else in Tamarindo. It will be the first place we go to next year.” 5 Stars.

What’s new at Pangas Beach Club and Las Mareas de Tamarindo

Pangas Beach Club

Like last month, business at Pangas is consistently strong and steady. In the middle of high season, we’re seeing more and more patrons by the day as word of mouth starts to build in Tamarindo and its surrounding towns. Some general news:

  • Events remain strong and Pangas has several weddings & events on the books for March
  • Wednesday evenings now feature live jazz music starting at 7 p.m.

‘Have a Heart’ Charity Golf Tournament

  • On February 14, 2013, Pangas Beach Club was proud to cater the barbecue for the 13th annual‘Have a Heart’ Charity Golf Tournament. The annual Valentine’s Day event is the major fundraiser for the non-profit Amigos de la Educacion Foundation, which offers scholarships to underprivileged youth in Costa Rica and works to improve local schools.
  • Pangas was selected to cater the day’s luncheon at Hacienda Pinilla and the event was a huge success – Everyone was thrilled to be a part of such a good cause and we hope to join forces again next year.

Valentine’s Day

  • Valentine’s Day was jam-packed as the team worked to cater the‘Have a Heart’ Charity Golf Tournament luncheon during the day and host a special ‘aphrodisiac’ themed dinner back at the restaurant that night.
  • The special ‘Aphrodisiac’ menufeatured mouth-watering dishes such as lobster stuffed roasted red peppers served over arugula salad with an organic honey balsamic vinaigrette and sauteed snapperserved over a heart of palm risottowith an avocado leek sauce…. mmm!
  • The restaurant was completely full for dinner and guests also enjoyed a moonlit fire dancing show under the stars. Que romantica!

Sunday Funday!

  • In February, Pangas kicked off its new weekly Sunday Funday event.
  • Each Sunday, Pangas now offers an all-you-can-eat BBQ buffet featuring dishes such as smoked ribs with pineapple BBQ sauce and mixed seafood paella.
  • Sunday Funday also features kids’ activities, face painting, live music with Darin Talbot and fun for the whole family.
  • The first event was a huge success and we hope Sunday Funday becomes a regular fixture at Pangas.

Las Mareas Villas

March is already turning out to be a big month for the six villas on Lot 14 in El Tesoro. Within the past two weeks, the Bosch appliances (washers, dryers, refrigerators), Samsung TV’s & electronics, Cuisinart kitchen furnishings and everything else you could imagine from Crate & Barrel have arrived to make the villas 100% turnkey. Each day, the villas look more and more like finished units and by the time April rolls around, you might not even recognize them!

Bi-Folding Doors

The La Cantina bi-folding doors arrived last month and are being installed as we speak. Villa #1already has its set (as shown in the image – left).

Kitchen Cabinetry

  • The kitchen cabinetry is going in and looking better than we could have imagined.
  • Our cabinetry was designed by Esteban Cordoba, the same designer who did the cabinets for the Four Seasons Hotel and you can tell, the quality of the wood and construction detail is top-notch.
  • Soon, we’ll install the ovens and Bosch appliances to complement the wood cabinets.

Other Upcoming Events

  • The quartzite granite kitchen counter topsare slated to be installed next week.
  • Also, the high-efficiency 17-seet Carrier air-conditioning units are being installed at this very moment.
  • The pool area is really coming along – So far, the team is hard at work on the common lounge and BBQ area, bathroom and infinity-edge pool. One of our favorite features is the concrete staircase leading down to the pool area – which also boasts beautiful ocean views!

Until Next Time…

  • In a bit of non-construction related news, Las Mareas is also one of the silver sponsors for this year’s 2013 Robert August Surf & Turf Contest to benefit CEPIA, a Costa Rican non-profit dedicated to youth education and empowerment in rural Guanacaste.
  • The annual contest includes a surf and golf tournament and takes place from March 15 – 18. Hope to see you all there!

With the daily progress on Lot 14 and the buzz around Tamarindo, it feels like everything is all coming together. We’re confident March will mark many big milestones for Las Mareas as we continue to show the villas and handle new inquiries daily. Very exciting! Stay tuned to our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/lasmareas, for more updates and new photos of the construction as we go along.

Newsletter: February, 2013

What’s new at Pangas Beach Club and Las Mareas de Tamarindo.

Pangas Beach Club:

  • Wedding season has officially begun at Pangas! On Tuesday, January 29, the Beach Club hosted its first nuptials for Owen and Laura Lessarda. The couple brought 40 of their closest friends and family from Canada for an intimate ceremony on the beach, which was followed by a gorgeous candlelit dinner and reception with live music and dancing in Pangas’ outdoor seating area. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the feedback from the wedding party was nothing but positive.

Weddings & Events

  • Speaking of events, Pangas already has between 6 and 7 weddings and other events on the books for 2013. Not a bad start! With an average of 1-2 wedding/event inquiries coming in per-week, we anticipate 2013 to be a great year for events.

New Hours + Sunday Brunch

  • Pangas also recently changed its schedule to meet local demands and is now open 7-days a week.
  • Two weeks ago, Pangas started doing Sunday brunch, which is now a regular fixture. Each Sunday, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. we’ll be serving a special brunch menu, which includes a special “mini brunch buffet” featuring dishes such as mini omelette rolls with sauteed vegetable and cheese, Pangas rolls with smoked salmon and mango jalapeno cream cheese and fried goat cheese with mango chutney… yum!

Extended Fish Market & Happy Hour Specials

  • Pangas Fish Market is Tamarindo’s best kept secret… And we’re excited to introduce the expanded boutique market this month. The new and improved fish market will feature all the ingredients needed to bring home and follow our head chef’s recommended recipes using the area’s freshest seafood right in your own kitchen. Remember: Our fish makes it to the display case 2-3 days earlier than our competitors and the prices can’t be beat!

  • This month, Pangas will also start offering a happy hour with drink specials and a variety of bocas to snack on as you enjoy a refreshing cocktail on the beach at sunset. Live music and other entertainment will also correspond with happy hour at Pangas. Stay tuned to our Facebook page,www.facebook.com/pangastamarindo, for announcements about the day’s specials and all upcoming entertainment and event schedules!

Las Mareas Villas

  • We continue to watch the six villas on Lot 14 come to life each and every day. Currently, workers are plugging away building and installing the hardwood shelving units and other wood features for each villa right on-site.

Wood Accents, Doors & Travertine Tiles

  • The La-Cantina bi-folding doorshave arrived and will begin being installed this month.
  • Natural beige coralline stone travertine tiles are being laid in the bathrooms of villa #1 and villa #2 alongside plumbing fixtures and wood cabinetry.

Bosch Appliances & Vacation Rentals

  • The Bosch appliances, including stainless-steel refrigerators, washers and dryers, are on their way from the U.S. and should arrive at Las Mareas by the 15th.

  • Aside from the construction progress, we’ve noticed a jump in vacation rental inquiries coming in to our website (www.lasmareas.com) and other online rental hubs such as VRBO (Vacation Rental By Owner) and AirBnB.com. Nothing is official just yet, but we are in talks with several interested parties about the possibility of booking Las Mareas for upcoming vacation rentals inJuly and August of 2013.

Until Next Time…

There’s plenty more happening day-to-day on the ground here at Las Mareas, but we hope this quick monthly update helps to keep everyone in the loop.

‘Tis the Season for Giving

Help fight poverty in Costa Rica with a unique community-to-community fundraiser!

Las Mareas and Pangas Beach Club want to show their support for a great cause this holiday season by helping to collect donations for the 2012 holiday fundraiser event for the children of Laurel de Corredores, sponsored by the San Jose-based charity, the Musa Green Group.

We have gift cards – $5, $10 and $20 – for purchase at the El Tesoro Sales Office and Pangas Beach Club across the street. Each card is symbolic and your donation goes to the Musa Green Group for food, sponsored educational activities and a gift for each child in the Laurel de Corredores community at the upcoming holiday party.

$10 Gift Card

With so much poverty and hardship in the world today, we at Las Mareas feel it is important to give back to the country that supports us each and every day. It’s an incredible concept that we in the Tamarindo community can touch the lives of families living just a few hours away in the town of Laurel de Corredores, located in Puntarenas. With just a small cash donation or the symbolic purchase of a gift card, we can help ensure these families and their children have a merry Christmas this year. The community-to-community support is something that makes this fundraiser (and all of  Costa Rica) unique and we are proud to support the cause! Working together is how we continue to improve our community, our country and ourselves.

The deadline to donate is this Saturday, Dec. 1

So PLEASE, contact suzanna@lasmareas.com (8538-3687) or Andre Ochoa at andreita8a@hotmail.com (8748-6696). Gift cards can be purchased or donations made at the following locations:

Article: Pangas Beach Club to Open this Month

Flamingo Chef to bring Fresh Seafood, Laidback Luxury to Tamarindo

Article from the November 2012 Issue of the Howler Magazine

TAMARINDO – This November, Flamingo-based restaurateur Jean-Luc Taulere and manager Elizabeth Cole are bringing a fresh take on Costa Rican cuisine to Tamarindo’s northern shore.

What’s in a Name? A small local fishing boat, also known as a “panga”

Taulere, an eighth-generation chef with roots in Le Perthus, a small town on the border of Spain in the south of France, is quick to clarify the concept behind the menu at Pangas Restaurant and Beach Club, set to open mid-month past the Best Western and across from El Tesoro on the hill.

“We’re not a Costa Rican restaurant in the typical sense,” he explains. “A French chef told me long ago when you have really great ingredients, the number one job of the chef is to not screw them up. The flavors are good from the earth and it’s important not to try to change themBouncy Castle Mini Jungle ouverte, but instead we want to take what’s naturally good and enhance those flavors – that’s always been my concept in the kitchen.”

By highlighting what’s naturally good from Costa Rica – fresh seafood, exotic fruits and local spices – Pangas will make a welcome addition to the Tamarindo dining scene. Playing up local ingredients in the kitchen through a mix of cooking methods from across the globe works well for Taulere – a fact evident in the success of his Flamingo-based restaurants Mar y Sol and Coco Loco. But this high season, the focus will be on showing the Tamarindo community just what makes Taulere’s approach to Costa Rican beachfront dining so popular in the Guanacaste region.

Earlier this spring, Taulere jumped on board with Pangas when approached by Bruce McKillican, project manager of Tamarindo’s newest real estate project Las Mareas de Tamarindo at El Tesoro – a residential community that will feature 3-bedroom ocean view villas and down the line, a beachfront boutique hotel on several lots within the El Tesoro gated community.

An extension of Las Mareas, Pangas Beach Club is the first element of the highly anticipated real estate project to open its doors to the public after years of planning. McKillican explained the unique relationship between the Las Mareas residences on the hill and Pangas on the beach.

“Pangas is absolutely the aspect of Las Mareas that all the owners and developers at Las Mareas are most excited about,” he said. “The members of our group have chosen to live in Tamarindo because we love the lifestyle – Pangas is an expression of that. We wanted a place to promote this way of life – a great place with great food and great people to spend the day surfing and hanging out with family and friends.”

The first residence at Las Mareas will be unveiled in December and the first six units are expected to be complete in March 2013. But even once the residential side of the project is complete, Pangas will continue to play an important role in the Las Mareas lifestyle as well as serving as the public beachfront anchor to the Tamarindo community.

“I think the number one thing that is going to set Pangas apart is the location and the concept, which is automatically established in the name,” Taulere said referring to the name “Pangas,” which refers to small fishing boats like the ones in the Tamarindo Estuary. “That tells you how fresh we’re going to be – we’ll get our fish right off the panga boats; we’ll have the fishermen coming up to drop off their catch while people are eating in the restaurant.”

Seafood is the staple at Pangas and an in-house fish market will be serving up freshly caught fillets and a variety of premade dishes such as ready-to-eat shrimp cocktail, Peruvian-style ceviche, calamari salad and lump crab cakes.

At the Pangas fish market guests can pick up the catch of the day to take home for dinner or grab a prepped seafood appetizer for entertaining. For restaurant goers, Pangas will be serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner overlooking the Tamarindo Estuary with a menu that’s casually elegant marked by simple sophistication at an affordable price point.

“We’re trying to create the best possible quality of service, the best cuisine, wine and beer in an atmosphere that’s easygoing and at a price that’s reasonable. I think that’s a big part of the formula,” Taulere said. “We have a beautiful design with quality features, but it’s not an expensive place – it’s going to be very approachable and very reasonable.”

With high season coming up, Taulere will be busy rotating between Pangas and his two Flamingo restaurants, but with Cole at the helm of management, the team hopes to cook up a recipe for succulent success at Pangas on the beach. For more information call 2653-0024.
